چکیده

We study the properties of structured and unstructured Pc1 pulsations at a highlatitude station (Sodankylä; L=5.1) and a mid-latitude station (Nurmijärvi; L=3.3) during 18 storms occurring in low solar activity years. The storms were divided into two groups according to the their intensity as measured by the minimum value of the Dst index. Pc1 activity was studied from the day of storm sudden commencement onwards during six consecutive days. Having recently published the average results for all 18 storms [Kerttula et al., 1999], we concentrate here on the effect of magnetic storm intensity on wave properties. The source of structured Pc1s was found to be at lower latitudes during intense storms, in agreement with the lower latitude of the ring current during intense storms. Also, the source of unstructured Pc1s, the plasmasheet ions, was found to shift to lower latitudes during intense storms but this change was only observed in the early recovery phase. The great depletion of structured Pc1s on ground during storm main and early recovery phase, which is in apparent disagreement with space observations and model calculations, is even more dramatic for intense storms. This further emphasizes the significance of the ionospheric conditions for wave observations on ground, and suggests that the depletion is due to deterioration of the ionospheric Alfvén resonator during storm main phase. Moreover, the results support the idea [Kerttula et al., 1999] that Pc1 occurrence maximum during late recovery phase is related to the improved ionospheric amplification and propagation conditions, rather than the outward expansion of the plasmapause.

The Southern Hemisphere and equatorial region ionization response for a 22 September 1999 severe magnetic storm

The ionospheric storm evolution process was monitored during the 22 September 1999 magnetic storm over the Australian eastern region, through measurements of the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) from seven Global Positioning Systems (GPS) stations. The spatial and temporal variations of the ionosphere were analysed as a time series of TEC maps. Results of our analysis show that the main...

Probing the relationship between electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves and plasmaspheric plumes near geosynchronous orbit

[1] Plasmaspheric plumes created during disturbed geomagnetic conditions have been suggested as a major cause of increased occurrences of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves at these times. We have catalogued occurrences of strong Pc1 EMIC waves from 1996 through 2003 at three automated geophysical observatories operated by the British Antarctic Survey at auroral zone latitudes in Antarc...

Global characteristics of Pc1 magnetic pulsations during solar cycle 23 deduced from CHAMP data

We present a global climatology of Pc1 pulsations as observed by the CHAMP satellite from 2000 to 2010. The Pc1 center frequency and bandwidth are about 1 and 0.5 Hz, respectively. The ellipticity is mostly linear with the major axis almost aligned with the magnetic zonal direction. The diurnal variation of Pc1 occurrences shows a primary maximum early in the morning and a secondary maximum dur...

Magnetic Storm Effects in the Atmospheric Electric Field Variations

The vertical component (Ez) of the atmospheric electric field variations, measured at middle (obs. Swider) and polar (obs. Hornsund) latitudes under “fair-weather” conditions, have been analyzed. The strong effect of sharp daytime Ez increasing (negative Ez anomalies) in the middle latitudes was found during the main phase of the strong and moderate magnetic storms. The negative Ez deviation st...

Observations by the CUTLASS radar, HF Doppler, oblique ionospheric sounding, and TEC from GPS during a magnetic storm

Multi-diagnostic observations, covering a significant area of northwest Europe, were made during the magnetic storm interval (28–29 April 2001) that occurred during the High Rate SolarMax IGS/GPS-campaign. HF radio observations were made with vertical sounders (St. Petersburg and Sodankyla), oblique incidence sounders (OIS), on paths from Murmansk to St. Petersburg, 1050 km, and Inskip to Leice...
